Charl Wessels

Charl Wessels is a South African place-based watercolour artist whose work explores atmosphere, memory and our emotional connection to place. Rooted in careful observation and lived experience, he paints landscapes, cityscapes and quiet moments that invite viewers to slow down and notice the beauty often overlooked. Working primarily in watercolour, he creates paintings that evoke stillness, reflection and a profound sense of place. A self-taught artist, Charl rediscovered painting after a career in farming, bringing to his practice a lifetime of observing the natural world with patience and humility. His work reflects a belief that art can create moments of calm, connection and belonging.

The Dreamer | Artist, Designer & Teacher

Salome Wessels

Salome Wessels is a South African multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, illustration and design. At the heart of her work is a fascination with people-their emotions, relationships and the stories they carry. Through layered visual narratives, she invites reflection rather than explanation, allowing meaning to emerge through atmosphere, symbolism and intuition. Drawn to the human figure from an early age, Salome explores memory, identity and the quiet moments that reveal our shared humanity. With a background in architecture, she brings a thoughtful approach to composition, narrative and place, creating work that is both emotionally resonant and deeply intentional. Her practice reflects a belief that stories have the power to deepen connection and that art can transform fleeting moments into enduring memories.

The Innovator | Artist & Teacher

Madie (Wessels) vd Meulen

Madie is an integral part of the Vessels Studio team, bringing thoughtful organisation, fresh ideas and a calm, practical presence to every project. While her professional career is in physiotherapy, she discovered a love for watercolour painting, embracing it as a creative outlet that offers rest, joy and space to slow down. She supports the studio as an assistant artist during live portrait events and enjoys teaching the fundamentals of watercolour through beginner-friendly workshops, helping others discover the confidence to create. Whether behind the scenes or alongside the artists, Madie contributes to the welcoming, collaborative spirit that lies at the heart of Vessels Studio.
